A Board Certified Veterinary Surgeon

Surgical Resident

WHAT IS A SPECIALIST

A specialist is a Veterinarian who is board certified in a specialty recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Surgery is one of these recognized specialties. To obtain board certification, the specialist must have graduated from a Veterinary School, completed a 1 year internship, 2-3 years of residency, and then have successfully passed written, oral, and practical examinations.

Because of his/her advanced training, the specialist is able to work with the general practitioner to provide optimal care for your pet. Your doctor will receive complete reports as well as updates of your pet’s progress.

WHY SHOULD I SEE A SPECIALIST

The rapid and dramatic advances in Veterinary Medicine make it difficult for the general practitioner to keep current with the techniques and instruments needed to manage some of today’s complex surgical problems. The board certified veterinary surgeon possesses the training, equipment and experience to handle these difficult cases. By working together, your Veterinarian and the specialist become a team to provide your animal with the best possible care.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A SPECIALIST

Just as you have become familiar with specialists in human medicine and the referral process, your Veterinarian recognizes the need for a second opinion. For this reason he/she has recommended a specialist to ensure the optimal care for your pet. It is important that you realize that your Veterinarian will be kept informed of your animal’s progress, both by telephone and written reports. At an appropriate time following your pet’s surgery, your Veterinarian will again become your primary care giver.

APPOINTMENTS

Office hours are by appointment Monday through Saturday and are generally scheduled in the morning, as surgery is performed in the afternoon. Afternoon appointments and drop-offs can be accommodated by special arrangement only. Please bring copies of your records and radiographs with you. As a rule, do not give your pet any food or water the day of their appointment to allow for sedation and/or surgery the day of examination.

FEES

A written estimate is given at the time of examination. The fees are comparable to those of other specialists in the area. For your convenience, we accept all major credit cards.
